Nathan reported the following conversation to me:
Z: Daddy, I'm feeling sad.
Nathan: Why, Z?
Z: I'm just thinking about Lu and how she died on the cross.
Huh??

All About Eden
It was just a year ago that we found out we were having a little girl. It wasn't the first time we'd seen Eden, but we saw her more clearly than we ever had before, even though it was only through sound waves. But now, a year later, we see her with our own eyes, face to face. Oh that we could see all the ones we love that way soon!

The Wisdom of Superman
Z: Can I watch a superheroes movie on the computer?
Me: Yes, I think that would be ok.
Z: Ok, but just one episode.
Me (suprised): Really? Just one? Why?
Z: If I watch anymore it would ruin my appetite.
And later:
Z (looking at a picture): That man has brown skin.
Me: Yes, some people have brown skin and some have white skin and some have skin that's a color kind of in between.
Z: Yeah.
Me (this question may not have been well thought through): Which color skin do you like best?
Z: (no hesitation): Blue.

The Apple Orchard
A couple of weeks ago we went to the local apple orchard. It was a gorgeous day and everyone had a great time picking and eating the apples. After we got home we had so many apples I decided to cheat and use pre-made pie crust. It is the most wonderful thing in the grocery store! I can make a delicious apple pie in 15 minutes instead of 45, and the clean-up is half of what it is when I make my own crust.
Here are a few pictures of the day:

Lunch Conversations
Last week I took the kids to the USF cafeteria for lunch. We sat with several other professors and I overheard this conversation between Z and Kirby (a former sociology professor):
Kirby: Do you like having a little sister?
Z: Yes.
Kirby: Do you help change diapers?
Z: No!
Kirby: Why not?
Z: They are too stinky!
Kirby: Are you stinky?
Z: No . . . but I make the biggest poops in the whole world.

The Hose
The other night we were coming home from a friend's house and it was late. But Z desperately needed a bath. So, in order to try to get it done quickly, I told him he could take a shower instead. Now normally, he likes taking a shower, but for some reason this time he decided to insist on a bath. After a few minutes of negotiation, Nathan stepped in and said, "Z, you can either pick the shower or the hose." Without a moment's hesitation Z replied, "The hose!" Nathan's face was pretty funny -- clearly he'd just had his bluff called. But, true to his word, Nathan gave Z a hose down when we got home. A good time was had by all, and Z went to bed happy AND clean.

Life
This is just a hodgepodge of pictures from the last month or so. I can hardly believe summer is over! I'm a little sad. Enjoy the pictures!

Winter Thrills
Today Z asked me when winter would start. I told him probably in about 3 months (if we're lucky). His response was great joy. My response to that: puzzlement. When I asked him why he wanted it to be winter he said, "Because then I can wear my new boots that Steven gave me!"
Apparently still thinking about winter when we got home from our walk, he asked to see his Spiderman coat. We both were thinking it would be too small this year, but when we put it on him, it still fit! Z was thrilled -- just one more reason to look forward to winter. I left him looking at himself in the mirror and went to get dinner. When I came back a few minutes later to call him to the table, he was still gazing lovingly at his reflection. I told him to come to supper and he said, "Just a minute, Mama. I'm trying to see if I look awesome."

Summer Vacation Part 2: Mexico
After a week in Kansas, we went to Mexico to visit Lee and Cindy for just a little over a week. They live in a little village named Ajijic on Lake Chapala. Below are some pictures from our visit.
Our little house had a very pretty little courtyard.
The inside was very comfortable.
Z looking out over the lake as we waited for our breakfast.
Eden looking startled about something.
Nathan and Z went for a hike with Grandpa. I think they're examining a dung beetle in this picture.
Z and Grandma.
Me and Cindy.
Nathan and Lee on a hike. The village is spread out below them.
(Yes, Nathan's shirt says "Buckbo.")
Z and Grandpa on the way down.
Nathan and Z watching Airplane on TV. Z loved having a TV but could not figure out why we couldn't just fast forward over the ads. He kept saying, "Mama, I do not like these!"
Me and Eden.
Z on the lake. Unfortunately there was no swimming, but it was very beautiful.
We ate at what seemed to be a little hole in the wall restaurant, but once you got through the front door, it opened up into beautiful gardens with little tables scattered around. Z explored as we waited for our meal.
